Dear FUSD Community,

We spent last week expressing appreciation for our educators for all they do in support of students. This week, I’d like to take a moment to thank our parents and families for the vital role they are playing during this challenging time.

Our teachers and staff have worked hard over the past eight weeks to ensure learning will continue during our Shelter-in-Place, but this effort would be in vain without the cooperation of you at home. We have long recognized the importance of the partnership between schools and families in helping our students succeed. The COVID-19 crisis has only re-empathized - and I hope strengthened - that bond as we work together to finish the school year.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to your teacher(s) or principal with any questions or concerns about your child’s distance learning experience. The District also has resources and equipment available if you are having any issues with connectivity.

Besides your child’s regular lesson plan, there are many other activities and resources to supplement the curriculum. Please visit the District website for more information appropriate for elementary and secondary grade levels.

Reopening of Schools

I am understandably receiving many questions regarding the reopening of schools in the fall. Our staff is having regular discussions on this topic and is in the process of creating a FUSD Task Force to oversee the District’s preparations. As of today, we expect schools to reopen as scheduled for the first day of the 2020-21 school year on Wednesday, August 26th. How classes will look at that time is still to be determined. Our task force will be preparing for a variety of contingencies depending on what state, county and/or local guidelines are in place concerning social distancing and large gatherings. We will communicate all decisions to you as soon as they are made and implemented. I ask for your patience and flexibility, and your feedback, as we work through this process as efficiently and safely as possible. The FUSD Task Force’s first priority includes implementing guidelines to close this school year. We will update our district community once details are finalized.

Budget Update

Governor Newsom presented his May budget-revision yesterday. The budget summary provides a breakdown of the distribution of funds that will guide us through anticipated reductions needed in the District’s 2020-21 budget. Our Business Services Department is studying the revision and will present to the FUSD Board of Education on its potential impact at the Board’s Wednesday, May 20th, meeting. I will provide you with updates as they become available.

Your partnership with FUSD is valued and appreciated. Your support is another fine example of what makes our community special and how we will overcome these challenges together.

Raúl M. Zamora, Ed.D.
Acting Superintendent
